Gaël Segalen - « Squidlike »

Improvisation & editing. Paris, spring 2016.
This is a subgenre of what can be defined as "water music". You hear sounds of waters indeed, with movements of many kinds, in a non-ending trajectory.
Both portrait and soundscape, this piece is a tribute to a squid, a solitary creature in its environment.
Evolving in the deep sea, showing up to the water's surface, solo traveling, a messenger maybe? … an explorer with a sense of freedom.
Time is repeating in the immensity, with a question to us : where to go ?
This piece wasn't made with water, nor with a squid.


Gaël Segalen aka IhearU, Paris - France

20 years in sound, from social sciences, to radio, to on-location sound for film, to field recording, to education, to travel the world to collect voices, to audio art / interaction / anthropology and geology, to music composition… French sound artist, activist and musician Gaël Segalen aka IhearU has a very diverse experience in sound and is focused on polylistening, dissonance and new music, as well as to create people’s encounters in improvisation spaces. She believes all the noises she has collected or manipulated, can coexist in one inclusive spirit, here and now, and transposes the complexity of the world into electroacoustic and polyrhythmic soundscapes, bruitisme and DFR (Danceable Field Recording) compositions. The reconciliation of all the noises she has collected from her travels is manipulated in the studio, in one inclusive spirit, here and now.

In June 2016 she has released her first album L’ANGE LE SAGE; she has a diploma in concrete and electroacoustic composition in the lineage of the GRM (Groupe de Recherches Musicales), had worked with the Paris-based Collectif Mu since 2005 on sound art projects, co-signs the piece and performance “Vertigo” with Joachim Montessuis, collaborates with Afrikan Sciences since 2012 on their duo "Les Graciés" (debut album on Firecracker Recordings in Oct 2016), conducts sound workshops, composes sound for films and installations. One of her most recent collaborations in the field of film was the production of the soundtrack for the film PANORAMIS PARAMOUNT PARANORMAL by Constanze Ruhm and Emilien Awada (2016).“
